2005

Interprint, Inc.
Interprint, Inc., headquartered in Arnsberg, Germany, is constructing a $27 million 135,000 square foot building to house both office and manufacturing space in Pittsfield, MA.  The company prints decorative laminating products for residential and commercial use.  Interprint, which employs 127 at its Pittsfield facility, added 21 new jobs since January 2004 and projects employment to increase by an additional 25 percent upon completion of construction.  The new facility will be the biggest investment project in the history of Pittsfield.  Interprint contributes more than $50,000 per year to charitable and cultural nonprofit organizations within Berkshire County, and Interprint has been honored by Lieutenant Governor Kerry Healey with the Governor's Inner City Investment Award in recognition of its business investment and job creation in Pittsfield's urban center.

Intel Massachusetts
Intel Massachusetts and its 2,300 employees in Hudson build chips, software building blocks, and other ingredients of computers and communication products.  In February 2005 Intel commenced a $17 million investment in Hudson to increase manufacturing capacity by 25 percent.  Intel has already filled 100 of 160 associated new jobs.  In September, Intel announced an additional $155 million investment and hiring of 300 more employees to further increase manufacturing capacity.  Intel Massachusetts works with local and state educators to improve science, math and technology education with a special focus on females and minorities.  The Massachusetts Association of School Committees has twice named Intel and Outstanding School Partner.  More than 38% or employees participate each year in Intel Involved, a community service volunteerism program.  They work with area councils on aging, food pantries, the American Red Cross, various environmental protection organizations, and run back to school and holiday gift drives, as well as an annual Community Giving Campaign.

DuPuy Orthopaedics, Inc.
DePuy Orthopaedics, Inc., a Johnson & Johnson company, designs, manufactures, and distributes orthopaedic devices and supplies.  The company's expansion in Raynham is comprised of 74,000 square feet of new office space and is supplemented with laboratory and surgical suite renovations.  The expansion allows for up to 385 new personnel to be employed at the Raynham site with 150 having been hired in 2004 and 2005.  DePuy Orthopaedics is also expanding manufacturing operations at its New Bedford site, adding manufacturing capacity and related professional offices that will accommodate up to 50 additional employees.  The expansion at these sites strengthens the important medical device manufacturing base in Southeastern Massachusetts.  DePuy's community service activities include contributions to J. Robert Gladden Orthopaedic Society (JRGOS) to increase diversity in the orthopedics profession and employee participation in the Pan-Massachusetts Challenge, a two day, 200-mile bike-a-thon whose proceeds benefit the Dana Farber Cancer Institute through its Jimmy Fund.

Straumann USA
Straumann USA, the United States operation of the Swiss medical device manufacturer, chose to locate its first North American headquarters in Andover after engaging in a multi-state site search.  Straumann is a global leader and pioneer in oral implantology and dental tissue regeneration.  Straumann's 161,000 square foot facility, which opened in May 2005, will house the company's US management as well as a state-of-the-art production and development unit to manufacture high precision implants for tooth replacement.  Straumann plans to employ 300 at the facility within five years and has already added over 50 jobs associated with its expansion.  A new business to Andover, Straumann is in the process of opening a dental clinic in its new facility in conjunction with Harvard Dental School; the clinic will provide dental services to low income residents of surrounding towns and provide services to patients with ectodermal dysplasia.  Straumann is also active in the Merrimack Valley Chamber of Commerce.

Merck Research Laboratories
Merck Research Laboratories (MLR) is the research division of Merck, a leading research-driven pharmaceutical products and services company headquartered in Whitehouse Station, NJ.  MRL recently established its first Massachusetts facility in the Longwood Medical Area of Boston.  The research center is devoted to discovering therapeutics for oncology, Alzheimer's disease, and obesity.  MRL was attracted to Boston because of the city's initiatives to promote the growth of life sciences and to the world-class medical and academic institutions anchored by Harvard Medical School.  The 300,000 square foot facility, which opened in October of 2004 with 220 new employees will contain 18 new laboratories.  MRL projects a full employment of 460.  MRL's contributions to the region include devoting a large part of the building's first floor to a laboratory created for community use and educating teachers and students about the life sciences.   Merck's national philanthropic goals support biomedical science training and education worldwide.

Boyd Converting Company, Inc.
Boyd Converting Company, Inc. is a supplier to industrial, medical, consumer and clean room markets of high value-added non-woven and specialty paper products and converting services for technical applications.  The company, headquartered in Lee, MA, has recently made substantial additions to its facility, adding 40,000 square feet in 2003 and 2004 to reach its current size of 80,000 square feet.  In addition, Boyd has leased an additional 40,000 square feet in an adjacent building for manufacturing.  Over the past two years, Boyd has also increased its employment by 88 percent from 67 to 126.  Plans are in place to hire 10 more employees.  In addition, total payroll will increase by $1,750,000 per year from 2003 to 2005 to over $5,000,000.  The company has dedicated over $300,000 to workforce training in the past two years, including support of English as a second language.

Nypro, Inc.
Nypro, Inc. is a leading global provider of precision plastics injection molding and related manufacturing solutions with over 12,000 employees at 61 locations in 17 countries.  The company manufactures products for the healthcare, electronics, telecommunications, consumer, industrial and automotive industries.  Headquartered in Clinton, MA, Nypro recently constructed a 105,000 square foot manufacturing building.  In addition to the 1,200 jobs currently in Massachusetts, this new facility is expected to house 100 new jobs, with potential growth to 150.  Nypro's community involvement includes its serving as a charter sponsor of the national High School Robotics competition; founding NYPRO Institute, which offers educational programs in injection molding, and crating a foundation that invests in the Clinton area.

Silver Line Building Products Corp.
Silver Line Building Products Corp., headquartered in North Brunswick, NJ, develops and manufactures high quality innovative vinyl windows.  The company recently invested $13.1 million in the construction of a new 200,000 square foot manufacturing facility in Fall River - the first New England location for Silver Line.  As a result of the new construction, nearly 460 jobs will be created over a five year period, with half of the new employment occurring in 2004.  It is anticipated that Silver Line's annual payroll by Year 5 will be $9 million.  Benefits to the region include increased business with local vendors and service providers and on-the-job training for both skilled and unskilled employees.

New Balance Athletic Shoe
New Balance Athletic Shoe is headquartered in Boston and manufactures and markets athletic footwear and apparel.  The company operates worldwide but has had a long history of investing in one of the Commonwealth's poorest communities, Lawrence.  The company has recently added two new facilities in Lawrence, creating 250 new jobs in Massachusetts in the past five years.  The sites in Lawrence include a 363,000 square foot warehouse and distribution center as well as a 521,000 square foot facility at the Ayer Mill in which the company invested $6.3 million in 2003 to support the manufacturing, R&D, and engineering processes.  New Balance employs 650 at its Lawrence facilities.

Novartis Institute for BioMedical Research
Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR) is the research arm of Novartis, the Swiss pharmaceutical company headquartered in Basel, Switzerland.  Novartis is a world leader in pharmaceuticals and consumer health and employs over 78,00 around the world.  In May of 2002, Novartis announced the reorganization of its entire global research operations into the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research.  Following that announcement, the decision was made to move NIBR's global research headquarters from Basel to Cambridge, Massachusetts.  The Cambridge location is the headquarters for NIBR facilities in the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Austria, Japan, and New Jersey.  Between March of 2003 and April of 2004, NBIR opened two facilities in Cambridge, which combined include 750,000 square feet of laboratory space and house over 700 employees.  By the end of 2004, the company expects to be fully staffed at approximately 1,000 employees.
