Strategic Location
The Northeastern
region borders New
Hampshire to the
north, Boston to the
south, and the
Atlantic Ocean to the
East. Proximity to
Greater Boston and New
Hampshire gives
industries in this
region the advantage
of being close to
extensive markets,
suppliers, and
research facilities.
The region's largest
business centers,
Lowell and Lawrence,
are located only 25
miles from downtown
Boston's financial
district. The
Merrimack River,
birthplace to the
country's Industrial
Revolution, has served
as an important
industrial river and
continues to be a
valuable resource for
the region. The
historic North Shore
region includes
several of
Massachusetts' oldest
port communities
including Salem,
Gloucester, and
Newburyport and is a
center for the fishing
and tourism
industries. The
communities of
Andover, Beverly, Danvers, and
Peabody are home to
several major high
technology companies
including: Analogic,
Philips
Medical Systems, Raytheon,
and Wyeth.
Excellent Road, Rail, Air and Port Access
The Northeastern
region's exceptional
transportation
resources help keep
transportation costs
low and response
time competitive.
Interstates 93 and
95 provide the
region with direct
north-south access
and Interstate 495
provided excellent
east-west access
between Lowell and
Lawrence.
The Boston &
Maine Railroad
provides efficient
north-south freight
service. Commuter
trains operated by
the Massachusetts
Bay Transportation
Authority also
provide service to
the area. The
region's proximity
to Boston gives it
superior national
and international
air transportation
access through Logan
International
Airport.
Manchester
Airport in
nearby New Hampshire
provides additional
options for domestic
flights. The Port
of Gloucester,
one of
Massachusetts' six
deep water ports,
provides an
alternative to the Port
of Boston.
High Tech Industry and Work Force
The computer
industry,
electronics,
telecommunication,
and industrial
machinery constitute
a significant
portion of the
Northeastern
region's industrial
and employment base.
Through the Center
for Industrial
Competitiveness
at the University
Massachusetts at
Lowell, the region
is a leader in
forging business and
university
partnerships. The
region also boasts
three outstanding
community colleges: Middlesex,
Northern
Essex, and North
Shore.
Salem
State College
also works with the
private sector in
bringing new ideas
to market and
assisting small,
start-up companies
in developing the
necessary tools to
launch new products.
The region also
benefits from an
extensive array of
training and
retraining programs
related to many
industrial sectors.
The Center
for Cooperative
Education at
Merrimack College
offers a variety of
professional
development and
skill-based
programs.
